Sept. 11 survivor looks back 10 years later

Retired Lt. Colonel Ryan Yantis will never forget Sept. 11.

The resident of Kief’s Reef in unincorporated McHenry County was working at the Pentagon in the media relations division that morning when two hijacked planes were flown into the Twin Towers in New York.

He watched on a television inside his office when the first plane hit. Then the second plane hit.

Yantis knew the world was never going to be the same.

“I turned to one of the people on my team, she was nine-months pregnant, and told her to get her stuff and get out of here,” Yantis told a group of residents Wednesday at the Crystal Lake Public Library. “‘Go home. We’re next.’”
